Low Self Esteem/ Confidence
Low Self Esteem/ Confidence
Low self esteem and low confidence are often used interchangeably, but they refer to slightly different things. Understanding the difference can be the first step toward improving them.
Low self esteem is about how you feel about yourself, your overall sense of self worth and value. It’s your deep seated belief about whether you are a good person, worthy of love and happiness.
Confidence is about your belief in your ability to perform a specific task or succeed in a particular situation. For instance, you can have high confidence in your cooking skills but low confidence in your public speaking ability.
Low self-esteem often leads to low confidence in many areas of life, but it’s possible to have low confidence in a specific area without it affecting your overall self esteem.
If you struggle with low self-esteem and confidence, you might:
- Constantly compare yourself to others and feel like you don’t measure up.
- Be overly critical of yourself, focusing on your flaws and mistakes.
- Avoid challenges or new experiences out of fear of failure.
- Have a hard time accepting compliments and may even dismiss them.
- Be a “people-pleaser,” putting others’ needs before your own to feel accepted.
- Experience a lot of self-doubt and may second guess your decisions.
- Feel unlovable or unworthy of good things.
How I help clients who experience low Self Esteem/Confidence
I help clients to explore the possible root causes of their lack of self esteem or confidence. Improving how you see yourself is a process that requires effort, patience, and self-compassion. We will work towards identifying your negative self talk (inner critic) and challenge some long held inaccurate beliefs about yourself. We will also focus on self care. Remember, improving self-esteem and confidence is a journey, not a destination. It’s about changing your habits and your mindset over time. Be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process.
