Cancer and Recovery
Cancer and Recovery
Cancer is a unique experience for everyone, it encompasses a huge range of physical, social and emotional experience. And recovery isn’t just about the absence of cancer; it’s about navigating a “new normal” and living well after treatment.
Cancer can rob clients of their independence and confidence. Everyone’s recovery journey is different. Some will experience side effects that last for months or years beyond treatment. Symptoms of pain and fatigue, isolation, lack of confidence; these are just some of the ongoing challenges you may be facing.
When treatment ends, many people expect to feel a sense of relief and celebration. However, it’s common to feel a mix of emotions, including anxiety, sadness, and fear.
Some clients say that the most challenging part of their cancer journey is the recovery after treatment, the impact of treatment and the adjustment thereafter. The cancer may have gone but the fear of recurrence can linger for many years. You may still be having regular appointments with hospital teams. This can be a source of anxiety and worry.
How I help clients who experience Cancer & Recovery
Cancer is a traumatic experience. It’s normal to feel a sense of grief for the life you had before your diagnosis. I will support you through both treatment and recovery. Being able to share your experience and your fears can help you to process these feelings. Navigating the new normal, possibly returning to work and to your social activities may feel daunting to begin with. Relationships may also be impacted by your experience of cancer. Looking to the future will be important to your recovery, finding meaning and purpose once more.
Recovery is a personal process. There will be good days and bad days. The key is to be kind to yourself, acknowledge your feelings, and reach out for support when you need it.
